I would like to take a moment to formally welcome parents and students to the 2009-2010 school year. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Hononegah Community High School District, we extend our best wishes to you for a successful school year.  As we prepare for another school year, I would like to briefly reflect on an outstanding 2008-2009 school year, and challenge our students, staff, and parents to help us achieve even greater things in the upcoming school year.

The 2008-2009 year brought a long list of accomplishments that continue to demonstrate the quality of students and staff at Hononegah.  Student achievement metrics show a pattern of sustained excellence.  Last year Hononegah students took over 500 Advanced Placement Tests, maintained a 93% graduation rate, and continued to score significantly above the state and national average on both the Prairie State Exam and the ACT.

However, a great school is more than just test scores. During the 2008-2009 school year, a record 57% of Hononegah students participated in an at least one extra-curricular activity.  Our student council, athletic teams, clubs, and fine arts programs all demonstrated excellence in ways that enriched our school and the entire community. Students from virtually all clubs and organizations showed an outpouring of generosity as they participated in a variety of community service projects.

A dditionally, hundreds of students were "Caught Doing Something Positive" for outstanding behavior in the hallways or classroom and/or received a Renaissance award for attendance and academic excellence.

Our athletic teams collectively earned their 2nd straight NIC-10 All-Sports Trophy. We are proud to declare that Hononegah has now won this prestigous award four of the last five years.  David Brown, boys basketball; Jacob Carabelli, boys swimming; and Shauna Heller, softball were all named NIC-10 MVP in their respective sports.  George Kelsey Award Winner, Dustin Meier was named the NIC-10 male athlete of the year.

Six Hononegah coaches were named coach of the year including:  Calianne Myers, cheerleading; D.J. McHugh, Girls Cross Country; Matt Simpson, Baseball; Lisa Larson, softball; Mike Miller, boys basketball; and Marty Kaiser, wrestling.

While the community can take great pride in the accomplishments of the 2008-2009 school year, there is still room for improvement during the 2009-2010 school year.  Hononegah continues to develop programs with a focus on helping all students thrive academically. The Hononegah English Tutorial Program lowered the failure rate in Freshman English to below 1%. The HOMANI program, which helps freshmen transition to HCHS, will welcome a its third cohort of students.  Summer School was filled with students taking advantage of enrichment courses like PSAE Math, Developmental Reading, World History, and U.S. Government.  English Tutorial, HOMANI, and Summer School Enrichment all share the common purpose of helping more students to achieve high levels of academic and personal success.  Welcome back!
